INNER SURFACE ART EXHIBITION

The elegance and magnificence of Pignano Art Gallery is the perfect setting for the this contemporary art project called Inner Surface, a dialogue between the three artists and three elaborated techniques, bronze sculpture, experimental painting and photography on metals, investigating the theme of surface deepness.

Inner Surface is an oxymoron gathering to itself the potentiality of going deeply into by way of careful observation, opening a perspective not limited to the mere surface appearance but inviting the fascinating discovery of the detail just beneath.

An exploration of the material, ranging from the surface reflections to the structure concealed inside and within, defined in the masterful works of the German sculptor Janine von Thüngen, in the photography and painting of the Polish artist Tadeusz Niescier and in the mixed techniques of the multi-talented painter Antonello Viola.

Inner Surface is an ode to silent contemplation, a collective exhibition held in the harmonious environment of Borgo Pignano, a unique luxury retreat in the heart of Tuscany where art and creativity are naturally present, nourished and valued.

JANINE VON THÜNGEN  |  SCULPTURE, INSTALLATION

Born in Germany, lived and worked in Antwerp, New York, Moscow, Paris. Currently lives and works in Rome. After working in fashion design in Milan and Paris with, amongst others, Karl Lagerfeld, Janine von Thüngen spent over ten years as a set and costume designer for major Opera Houses across Europe. For the past fifteen years she has been working as a successful professional sculptor. Her sculptures and installations feature internationally in museums, public spaces and important private collections. Janine has also collaborated with public, commercial and charitable organisations, educational institutions, architects and other artists. Janine’s oeuvre is multifaceted and ever-evolving; she uses a variety of mediums ranging from traditional bronze, clay and glass to the more unusual rubber, hemp, water, sound and even plants. Works expand in scale from handheld to monumental sized sculptures, land art and sound installations. Janine is inspired by the contrasts and juxtapositions found in humans, nature and space; interactions between these elements are at the core of her works. Time and space are themes that mark the journey and evolution of her oeuvre. Participation between artist, viewer and art is fundamental to Janine.

TADEUSZ NIESCIER  |  PHOTOGRAPHY, PAINTING

Tadeusz Niescier, a renowned Polish painter and photographer, lives and works in the northeastern landscapes of Podlasie. He was awarded his Master Degree in Painting in 1978 by the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk. His doctoral thesis in visual arts won him his PhD in 2012, at the ‘Faculty of New Media and Scenography’ of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. His lifelong artistic study is grounded on the close observation of the simplest elements of plants and flowers, bringing the examination of detail to almost abstract expression. His paintings have been exhibited in Poland, Germany, USA. Niescier dedicates himself to teaching art and photography in various universities. Recently, his passion turned towards photography resulting in surprising portraits of the tiniest elements of plants in large scale, giving them new meaning and creating visual metaphors of cosmic infinities and human emotions. Extracted from their natural state, and often bearing the touch of time, these fragments of nature reveal incredible richness of texture and detail. In their faded abstract beauty, abundant and delicate, they capture, suspended in space, weightless frozen movements of life.

ANTONELLO VIOLA  |  PAINTING

Antonello Viola born in 1966 in Rome, received his degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 1989. After a long period of study in Spain, he received a PhD from the Fine Arts Department of the University La Laguna. His work has been exhibited in Rome, Milan, Frankfurt, Vienna and New York. He has taught decoration at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna since 1996. Viola’s artistic research, using paper glass and colour, plays with the possibility of not having pre-established directions but to pursue an approach that recovers the “zero degree” of painting in its total refusal of figuration. He thus emerges from the mere limit of the artistic object to open up to a conceptual elaboration that takes into account what interacts with the style and content proposed by the artist. The boundaries designed by Viola in his individual works are in fact lapsed and open to an indefinite elsewhere, an attempt to call the user to enter the space-artwork-artist trinomial.
